Multi split systems: several rooms, one outdoor unit

A multi split connects two to five indoor units to a single outdoor unit. Each room has its own controller and temperature, and you only have one condenser on the outside of the house.

Multi Split Air Conditioning Installation

Why people choose a multi split

  • One outdoor unit instead of several. That matters on a terrace, in a conservation area, on a small balcony or anywhere the outside of the house is on show.
  • Each room is controlled on its own. Run the bedrooms at night and the living room in the day.
  • Indoor units can be mixed: wall mounted in the bedrooms, a slim ducted unit hidden in a ceiling void, a floor console in a room with no high wall.

Getting the design right

  • Every outdoor unit has a minimum and maximum connected capacity and a list of compatible indoor units. We design the combination so the system is balanced, not just so the numbers add up.
  • Pipe lengths and height differences between the outdoor unit and each room are checked against the manufacturer's limits before we quote.
  • On larger homes we will often compare a multi split against two smaller systems. Sometimes two systems give better resilience and comfort for a similar cost, and we will show you both.

Tidy pipework

  • Multi splits mean more pipe runs. We plan routes through lofts, voids and cupboards wherever possible, and where pipework has to run outside it goes in colour matched trunking fixed straight and level.
  • Black or white trunking to match your downpipes and window frames, so the finished job looks like it belongs to the house.

Brands

We install systems from Daikin, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi Electric, Hitachi, Samsung, Clivet and Sinclair, and recommend the one that fits the job.

Questions

Common questions

How many rooms can one outdoor unit serve?

Domestic multi split outdoor units typically serve two to five indoor units. The exact number depends on the model and the capacity of each room.

What happens if the outdoor unit fails?

All the rooms connected to it are affected, which is the main trade off against separate systems. Quality equipment, correct installation and an annual service keep that risk low.

Can I add a room later?

Only if the outdoor unit was chosen with spare ports and capacity. If you think you will extend later, tell us at the survey and we will design for it.

Tell us about the rooms. We will come and survey them.
